Mapping Our Legacy

  • Co-Prosperity Sphere 3219 South Morgan Street Chicago, IL, 60608 United States (map)

We are partnering with Architexx for their traveling exhibit highlighting and writing the history of Activists and Advocates in Architecture. As the 7th stop on this national tour, we want to engage with and celebrate the rich history of minority architecture in Chicago. We are opening up our Legacy Map to the public for an interactive data collection and story telling experience!

We are lucky to have a special guest present to share her knowledge of some of Chicago's notable work by minority architects. Roberta Washington is principal at Roberta Washington Architects, PC, which she founded in 1983. She is the past president of the National Organization of Minority Architects (NOMA), a fellow of the American Institute of Architects, and an advisory board member of the Beverly Willis Architecture Foundation. She frequently lectures about the history of African Americans in architecture and has researched and written about early black women architects.

We will be actively inputting data about the work of minority architects in Chicago to contribute to our existing map infrastructure, which is the central focus of this initiative. We invite those with information to share their stories associated with these buildings. This is an event of writing and mapping history. If you have a story to share, or wish to learn the history of the work done in Chicago, join us! Refreshments will be provided.
