Q3 Recap: 2020

This has been a tough year, but we have some things to celebrate!

MEMBER HIGHLIGHTS

I-NOMA VP Ashlen Williams was chosen as an AIA Illinois Delegate at Large.

I-NOMA Student Liaison & Historian Mustapha Williams was appointed to the ACE Chicago Associates Board. As a former ACE Mentee and current ACE Mentor he has been a long-standing volunteer and advocate for educating youth in the fields of Architecture, Construction, and Engineering. Mustapha looks forward to adding a much needed voice to the conversations steering ACE Chicago and it’s programming.

The NOMA Foundation Fellowship is a new initiative facilitated by the National leadership of NOMA. The following students based in Illinois were awarded the Inaugural Fellowships: In-San Chiang, Tyler Sauter, Ola Odukoya, Nimah Mohiuddin, Aaron deRoux. The Foundation strengthens the mission of Project Pipeline to successfully matriculate more architecture school graduates as licensed professionals. Through mentorship in a well established firm, Fellowship awardees are guided through their first 5 years of professional experience with the goal of becoming a licensed architect.

New Licensed Architect: Imani Dixon passed all the ARE exams and is on her way to being I-NOMA’s newest licensed architect! Read more about her experience here: Beyond the Built Environment featuring Imani Dixon

CHAPTER HIGHLIGHTS

I-NOMA SCHOLARSHIP LAUNCH

This quarter, the E-board launched a scholarship & were able to award $1,000 to 12 students to support them this school year. An objective of the scholarship was to connect them with a mentor who can help them stay focused and navigate the challenges of school. Look forward to hearing their progress and growth for the duration of the mentorship!

PROJECT PIPELINE

55 students participated in this years’ virtual camp. The students learned how to design and organize a neighborhood. Individually, they proposed their design ideas either as an improvement on their own neighborhoods or an imaginary, ideal version. Eventually they worked on one of the buildings on their site and developed it in detail. Many participants welcomed the ideas of designing for justice and equity, with final projects resulting in a human trafficking prevention center, community center, and similar types! Volunteers enjoyed the breakout sessions which enabled them to work with and mentor a variety of students compared to working with a single group of students as in the past. It was a huge success and newly appointed National Project Pipeline Co-Chair and I-NOMA member Richie Hands and team are excited to build on and expand this years’ success!

DESIGN BUILD

The Design Build leadership selected Rebuilding Exchange as the 2020 design build partner! This year design build will be a completely virtual experience for the students, but this affords more opportunities for mentors to get involved.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT:

Virtual GBM #4 featuring Taylor Staten, LEED AP TnS Studio

Taylor delivered an inspiring presentation demonstrating how determination and being true to yourself and your community can pave the way for building a meaningful career and practice! Her story came full circle as a 2019 NOF award recipient for her office space in South Shore which will service the neighborhood in sustainable, affordable design and architecture solutions and services.
